About: Ama Waterways Cruises
Celebrating 18 years on the river, family-owned AmaWaterways, founded in 2002 by three families, has roots that trace back to Co-Founder and President Rudi Schreiner’s passion for design and travel. Schreiner, born in Vienna on the banks of the Danube, built his first ship, a raft, to navigate the Amazon for seven months in 1975, sparking his career in travel and leading to the creation of unique European tour experiences. AmaWaterways distinguishes itself with immersive shore excursions led by knowledgeable local guides, providing deep insights into each destination’s culture, history, and traditions. Culinary excellence is a cornerstone of the AmaWaterways experience, with exquisite dining options featuring locally-sourced ingredients and regional specialties, paired with fine wines. Additionally, the cruise line is acclaimed for its wellness programs, offering a variety of onboard fitness classes, a fleet of bicycles for guest use, and wellness activities catering to a range of preferences. Guests also enjoy luxurious accommodations with modern amenities, personalized service that ensures a memorable journey, and an overall experience that blends comfort, adventure, and cultural enrichment, making each voyage truly unforgettable.
Celebrating 18 years on the river, family-owned and operated AmaWaterways was founded in 2002 by three families; however, our river cruise story began well before that. Co-Founder and President Rudi Schreiner was born in Vienna, at the heart of the Danube. His love of design drew him to architecture, but his even greater love of travel drew him to places far and wide. In 1975, he traveled to South America for a journalism assignment on the Amazon. It was here he designed his first ship, using what he could find to build a raft that would take him up and down the river during the next 7 months. Soon thereafter, he started working in travel, creating unique tour experiences in Europe.
